I found a book at Borders that came out in 2010 that I just loved, so I'm going to share it so everyone else can enjoy it. The book is called The Game, by Monica Hughes, published by SimonPulse. Previously it was published as Invitation to the Game.
The Story- The year is 2154 and society is divided into two sections, the employed and the unemployed. Lisse is graduating from High School and is ready to enter the work force, the only problem, all jobs she qualifies for are already filled by robots. She and her friends are declared "unemployed" and sent to live by themselves in the one of the many unemployed sections of the city.
Struggling to get by the kids scavenge for everything they need to survive. Then they hear about The Game. No one can tell them exactly what it is, only that it gives unemployeds a chance. Unfortunately, it is invite only and nobody around knows how to get one.
When Lisse and her friends finally get the invite, they find themselves involved in a virtual reality game that mirrors real life. There are no rules and to survive they need to figure out the clues.
My Thoughts- I really liked this book. It was fun watching Lisse and her friends as they beat the odds and survived in a city full of dejected humans. The best part however, is the game. Just when you think you've got it figured out, 3/4 of the way through the book, everything changes. It's a great twist, I thought I figured it out, but I had to keep reading to make sure. The ending was very satisfying and I like the way the author chose to diffuse the unemployed situation that existed in society.
The giveaway- I have one copy of The game to give one lucky follower. Please fill out the Rafflecopter form below. If you don't see it, click 'read more'.
