Glow- Book Review and ARC giveaway
The Story- In the future the Earth is dying. Hoping to keep the human race alive, two great ships are sent into space to find a new earth.
Over fifty years have passed since their launch. On one ship, the Empyrean, live our main characters, Kiernan and Waverly, who are slated to be the first couple of the younger generation to marry and have children.
Problems arise when the second ship, the New Horizon, slows down to intercept the Empyrean. Fertility issues have caused the women of the second ship to be unable to bear children. In a desperate attempt they attack the Empyrean, stealing all the girl children and leaving only the boys to fix the now dead in space ship. Waverly is now the leader of the girls and Kiernan the boys. On different ships they fight to survive.
My Thoughts- Great book. I realized while reading it that there aren’t that many YA sci-fi books out right now. Besides Skyship Academy, which takes place on Earth (see review HERE ), Glow is a rarity.
The characters are fleshed out really well. Waverly is only 16, very unsure if she is ready to marry and bear children. She feels real pressure from every adult around to carry on the human race. The book deals with very ethical questions. What happens to her and the other girls is appalling, but when you look at it from the side of the New Horizon women, you understand why they do what they do. But, it still feels very disturbing.
Keirnan is placed in an impossible situation, the oldest boy left on the Empyrean, he has to lead boys as young as babies. You feel his stress, he doesn’t know what to do, he makes a lot of mistakes, but the entire time he does not give up. What his character evolves into by the end of the book is scary. He becomes the very thing that Waverly now knows is demented, a self professed prophet.
