Book Review - Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I had a chance to read an ARC of the upcoming Egmont release, Every Other Day, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. A great YA addition to the genre.

The Story- Kali is not quite human, well, every other day that is. On her odd days she is a self healing hunter of evil demon creatures. She lives her life in solitude, not wanting to endanger anyone else. But, the first day she attends public school, her life changes. She actually makes her first real friend, Skylar, a self confessed psychic. She also ends up saving the head cheerleader, Bethany, from a blood sucking chupacabras.

By allowing the chupacabras to invade her own body, Kali finds out she’s not alone in the world, that somewhere out there, her soul mate Zev is being held prisoner. With the help of her new friends, Kali sets out to rescue Zev, but she only has 24hrs to do it, because then she’ll turn into a human again.

My Thoughts – Great idea! I always wonder how come I didn’t think of that, it’s such a simple concept- every other day you change into something different. Anyway, Kali is a great character. She is so vulnerable on her human days and yet she still is on the look out to help others anyway she can. When she is inhuman, she is a butt kicking Amazon. Loved it.

Zev is also very interesting. The whole book you want them to get together, but when they do, huge twist! And then there is Skylar, who is my favorite character. She tells everybody she’s just a little bit psychic, when in reality she’s a whole lot psychic. Once you read the story, you’ll realize just how brave and courageous she really is. Her character adds humor and life to the book.

It is a really interesting look at a world like our own, that went down a different path. The funny thing, everyone knows hellhounds and demon creatures exist, but when confronted with vampires and psychics, everyone denies they exist. So true of human beings, denying what’s right in front of them.

This book is fast paced, full of action and great characters. There is a bit of violence, so I’d say this book is for 12 and up.  Expected pub date is Dec. 27th, 2011.
