Book Review and Giveaway- The Battle Begins by Tony Abbott

Middle Grade author, Tony Abbott, is back with a new fantasy series for kids. Just like The Secrets of Droon, his new series, Underworlds, involves 3 young children who end up journeying from Earth into a different world. The first book in the series is entitled, The Battle Begins. I have my review copy to give away, just fill out the rafflecopter form. If you don't see it click 'read more'.

The Story: Owen Brown is a typical fourth grader. One day, while late to class, he see’s an event that changes his life. Right before him, only a few feet away, his good friend Dana is sucked through a hole in the floor and into the Underworld. His best friend Jon finds Owen’s story hard to believe until Sydney, a new student, confirms she saw it happen too. Now the three of them set out on a mission to rescue Dana. They unravel clues and travel into the underworld themselves, only to find out that bigger things are brewing.

My Thoughts- This is a fun early middle grade book. It starts off right away with Dana getting sucked through the floor, the perfect hook for any kid. From there on the adventure just continues, drawing kids in. The violence is not graphic or disturbing, but just the right level for 8 year olds. It reminds me of the Percy Jackson stories, but for younglings.

I am also just getting into the Ranger's Apprentice series which is pretty exciting. BTW - I really, really want Tony's new book. http://1000wrongs.blogspot.com

  9. My old favorite is perhaps Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising Series...and it's looking like a new favorite might be the Jennifer Nielsen's new series, that begins with The False Prince.
