Natalie Stewart successfully rescued Jonathon from his picture frame at the end of book one, Darker Still. Now Natalie and Jonathon are on the run, trying to evade the police looking for Jonathan. Their travels bring them full circle when Jonathon discovers that demons are also after his friends and that back in New York something horrible is happening.
Home in NY, Natalie plays the part of a mute once more as Jonathon goes undercover as a demon. They learn of gruesome body snatchings and attempted resurrections. Things grow darker as Natalie has troubling nightmares and a voice keeps whispering, “I’m coming for you.”
Just as dark and disturbing as book 1, plus a few more interesting characters added to the mix. This second book allows us to finally get a more dynamic view of Jonathan. We see him interacting with other people, showing emotions, and risking danger to defeat the demons. However, I just don’t feel he is a romantic hero. I’ve never connected with him. But, the story itself is strong, and Natalie is a fun character.
The author does a great job at making her stories creepy. There’s nothing too horrible in the story, but you still feel an overriding feeling of darkness. The main theme is a Frankenstein like plot, with stolen body pieces being made into a whole. The spirits that are tied to these body pieces are mad, and revolt, causing a great action ending.
Definitely unique and worth the read.
