It's Inside the Publishing World Wednesday and I am taking a look at literary agent Paul Lucas from Janklow & Nesbit Associates. I had the opportunity to hear Paul speak at this Summer's PNWA conference.
What is he looking for? Paul has a variety of things he is looking for ranging from children's to adult. He likes literary fiction, historical, mystery/suspense (cozy+detective), thriller (small town), Sci-Fi (Space opera + Steam punk), horror, fantasy, all YA, MG (boys side), and graphic novels. On the nonfiction side he is looking for cooking, events, pop culture, humor, and nature/science.
What does he like in a query? First off, do not send him your life story. He likes his queries short and sweet. Next, give him your pitch. He wants a well-told story with strong lead characters. He likes comps from the past 3 years and says don't worry about writing credits.
What should you do in a pitch? He thinks authors should relax and then get to the point.
