Welcome to Inside the Publishing World Wednesday. Today I am highlighting Chris Schoebinger, the Publishing Director of Shadow Mountain. I had the opportunity to meet him at the 2017 ANWA Conference in Arizona.
What is Shadow Mountain looking for?
Their sweet spot is children's middle-grade fantasy, but they are also looking for seasonal picture books, some inspirational fiction, and works that will grow their proper romance line (promotes virtue in romance). They are also looking for more non-fiction.
His advice for pitching to him- “If you’ve got it. Flaunt it. Tell me if you are a
children’s librarian, have a large social media following, or belong to a
writing group. Authors are a big part of the marketing campaign.”
But watch out, don't exaggerate. He says he might just check up.
Other pitching advice, "Go to publishers market place and see what is about to be published and how they describe it."
He told us, "The faster that you can get me to the point that I can get interested, the better." So don't beat around the bush. Paint a great picture of your work.
He strongly stressed the fact that your work needs to be critiqued by others before being sent in to query. Also, do not ignore the submission guidelines when you are ready to submit.
