The Story-
Book two finds us with Mari and Nik fleeing the burning forest with their companions. As they make it to the river, Nik decides Mari should return to the Earth Walker lands while he returns to the Tree City to help his tribe. Though Mari is not happy, she agrees.

While our two heroes separate, in the poisoned city of the Skin Walkers, the god of death takes possession of One Eye's body and begins plans to conquer the world, starting with the tree dwellers, whose homes now lie in ruins.

In Tree City, Thaddeus, the evil council member who killed Nik's father and wants to kill Mari, begins to take over the tribe, teaching members the disgusting practice of flaying live animals and grafting the skin over their own.

Nik flees back to Mari, and together, with the remains of Mari's Earth Walker clan and a few of Nik's tree dweller friends, they form a new group, the Pack. But, with Thaddeus out to kill them, and the god of death about to descend on the forest, Nik and Mari know they must flee with their people into the lands North. However, Nik will not flee without bringing seedlings from the mother plant to their new destination. So while the Pack prepares, he returns to the burnt forest, a desperate plan in mind.

My Thoughts-
As you can see, this is a multi-layered book, full of plot lines and adventure. Nik and Mari are able to do what they've always wanted, bring together both of their peoples, but this is only because Nik's home burns to the ground and evil Thaddeus brainwashes the tribe. The reader is able to see the struggles the Earth Walkers have in accepting Nik's people and their dogs (Companions). It is almost a given, as soon you read that Mari's people hold the puppies, that some bonds will occur. But still, it is fun to see it actually happen.

There are several different love stories in bloom. We have Nik and Mari, which is a beautiful tale of trial, loss and gain, but then we have story of the Lynx companion Antreas and his quest for a mate (hint, one of Mari's people) and the continuing sage of fellow Moon Mother Sora and the man who attacked her while under the moon craze, Jaxson.

This is definitely a bridging book where characters are expanded upon and situations are set up and begin to unfold. There is a lot of going back and forth between the Earth Walker dwelling and the Tree City, and Mari having to rush in and save Nik, twice! At over 400 pages, there is a lot of story building taking place, however, I'm so excited about where the story is going, that I'm okay with more narrative. Oh, and Mari uses her sun and moon powers in even more exciting ways.

P.C. Cast does it again! This story is well worth the read and this unique world she has created is full of life, scary gods and hopeful goddesses. 4.5 stars!
