Loretta Barrett- Agent
First a little background info. Loretta previously was editor in chief of Anchor Books and a VP and Executive editor at Doubleday. She is a founding board member and acting secretary for Reading is Fundamental, one of largest and oldest children and family non-profit organizations in the US. She founded her own literary agency in 1990.
As an agent, Loretta represents a wide range of fiction and nonfiction. She says that her tastes are very eclectic and have recently moved into the sci-fi range. Which is cool because her website says she doesn't handle sci-fi or fantasy. Her nonfiction interests include psychology, science and technology, religion, spirituality, current events, history, politics, women’s issues, and memoir. Her fiction preferences are largely mainstream and contemporary. She is particularly drawn to women’s fiction and thrillers. Regarding the children’s market, she handles some YA. A member of the AAR, she has representation in every major foreign market.
She is a very busy lady, receiving over 300 queries a week. A bit of advice, finish your MS before you send your query. Also, tell her if you’ve met. She keeps a list of people and events she’s attended.
