It’s time to meet Tricia Lawrence, an agent for Erin
Murphy Literary. Before joining Erin Murphy Lit she spent 16 years editing
picture books all the way up to college textbooks. Today she represents middle
grade and young adult fiction and nonfiction. I had the lucky chance to meet
her at the Spring SCBWI WWA conference.
What is Tricia looking for? She told us she wants a
character that is flawed, candid, someone that doesn’t have everything easy.
She likes to ask, “Is this a character I want to get to know and follow?”
What genres interest her? Right now her focus
is on selling and acquiring young adult and middle grade. However, in the next
6 month she will be shifting her efforts to picture books. She’ll look at
genres such as fantasy, historical, contemporary, paranormal and thriller/mystery.
Is an agent necessary? Yes! Tricia says, “I am a
human shield. I stand between the writer and their baby.” She is an advocate
that takes the fire from editorial so that the author can put their best work
out there.
What was Tricia’s favorite book/s as a child? She
loved the Narnia series. Right now she likes the picture book Stars by Mary Lyn
Ray and the middle grade Sparrow Road by Sheila O’Connor.
Want to know more about Tricia? She has a blog at www.authorblogger.net . “Each month you’ll get interviews from bloggers, authors, and publishing industry professionals all talking about how to better position yourself and your blog to build a long-term author career. Each interview will provide a core concept or “how to” that you need now to create your book marketing plan. This core concept gets you out of theory and into actually doing something.” I took that straight from her blog!
