Book Review- The Alchemists Academy Book 1- Stone to Ashes by Kailin Gow
As part of the Alchemist Academy series blog tour, I had a chance to read and review Stone to Ashes, the first Alchemist book. Remember- there is a $50 gift code giveaway going on right now- click here.
Wirt goes from foster home to foster home, never finding a good place to call home. One day, as a group of bullies decide to beat him up, something magical happens, he is transported to another world. Turns out he has a massive amount of latent power and since he doesn't know what he did to get there in the first place, his is allowed to stay.
His new home is The Alchemists Academy, a place where students from all over the universe and other dimensions come to learn magic, and rule worlds. Wirt takes to his classes well, and soon makes friends with a group of other students, including a princess.
Now, strange things are happening at The Academy, and it's up to Wirt and his friends to set things right.
I enjoyed the story. I love schools for magic, including the Harry Potter craze. The cool thing about this school is that you really don't know what is going on. From the get go some of the teachers seem shady, and there is a secret being kept. Wirt and his friends uses their powers of shape shifting to search for a missing object, only to discover that it might have been taken by one of the teachers.
I think the hardest time I had with the book is that I never could figure out who the good and bad guys were. In the end, Wirt has to choose between two groups of teachers. One group we know is hiding things and has a cruel streak. The other group we learn about as the story progresses, but never enough to know if what they believe is true. So, in the end, I'm not sure if Wirt choose the right group, and that left me hanging.
I see great potential in this series, and I can't wait to read book 2.
