Last night I had a great time at the Spring Inside Story for SCBWI Western WA. Twice a year local authors and illustrators get together at a local bookstore and celebrate new releases. This was the first time I was able to present! It was so exciting. I rehearsed what I was going to say all the way down there, and then when it was my turn to speak, I forgot half of it. Oh Well!
Let me share a few of the new releases that caught my eye. It was a real treat to hear from the authors!
The Sasquatch Escape by Suzanne Selfors- Two youth pretend to work at a worm care clinic when instead they are working at a secret clinic for mythical animals. One of the creatures escapes! Inside Scoop- Book 2 comes out this Fall.
Heroes in Training 3: Hades and the Helm of Darkness by Suzanne Williams
and Joan Holub.- Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades find themselves in the hot and stinky Underworld on a new quest to find the Helm of Darkness and one more missing Olympian. Inside Scoop- There are eight books planned for this series.
Hattie Ever After by Kirby Larsen- The further and final adventures of the stubborn and spunky orphan, Hattie Inez Brooks. I loved the first book, Hattie Big Sky! Inside Scoop- Kirby said no to doing a sequel for years. It wasn't until her editor suggested it that she gave in, but only after coming up a way to tie the two books together...an unscrupulous uncle.
The Wrap-Up List by Steven Arntson- When Gabriela receives a letter from
Death telling her she has one week to live, she must decide what she wants to accomplish before she "departs". Will she earn a pardon, or will she take her final walk into eternity? Inside Scoop- Steven has some serious poetry skills- he impressed the audience with a haiku about the book.
Hush by Stacey Campbell- An unknown princess is discovered by an undercover student journalist and then hunted down by terrorists on the campus of her elite boarding school. Inside Scoop- Stacey wrote this book for her oldest daughter. They shared chapters back and forth while her daughter was at college.
The Dark Shore by Kevin Emerson- Book two of the Atlanteans. The Dark
Shore continues the journey of Owen and Lilly across an ecologically ravaged future, in search of Atlantis, and a cure for the ailing planet. Inside Scoop- Kevin shared a song on a mini fiddle with us. Evidently the book has a lot of blood, vomit and bone sawing, lol. Release date: May. 21st.
A Moment Comes by Jennifer Bradbury- Set against the nearly forgotten history of the partition of India, A Moment Comes weaves together the story of three teenagers on wildly different paths. Inside Scoop- Jennifer lived in India and spent time learning the heartbreaking stories of families and persons affected by the partition. Release date: June 25.
Wise Young Foul by Sean Beaudoin- Teen punk rocker meets life at a juvie hall. Inside Scoop- Sean was in a band in high school. Release date: Aug. 6.
The Originals by Cat Patrick- 17-year-old Lizzie, Ella, and Betsey grew up as
identical triplets...until they discovered they were clones. Inside Scoop- The idea for the book came to Cat one day when she was so busy, that she wished she had clones to do all her work. Release date: May 7th.
How Not to Find a Boyfriend by Allyson Valentine- High school cheerleader Nora, devises a simple series of stunts to get close to Adam, but the stunts backfire. Inside Scoop- Allyson got her big break for this book at a writer's retreat where she worked on an exercise about voice. Her cheer leading character impressed the editor so deeply, that she called Allyson two weeks later with a book idea. Release date: June 13.
Shadow of the Mark by Leigh Fallon- It has been foretold that a relationship
between two Marked Ones could lead to untold catastrophe. Megan and Adam are willing to take the risk. Inside Scoop- Leigh splits her time between living in Seattle and Ireland. Her first book was discovered online and picked up by Harperteen. This is the sequel. Release Date: July 9th.
And did I mention The Emerald Ring! Release date: May 14th.
