It's Inside the Publishing World time, and today I am looking at literary agent Kathleen Rushall.
Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.
What does she like? Kathleen likes all forms of YA including, contemporary, suspense, Southern Gothic, historical fiction, thrillers, light fantasy and sci-fi. She also likes MG, PB (no early readers though) and nonfiction. She likes humor and twisty endings.
What is she looking for right now? In YA she would love to find a well-researched historical narrative or a dark mystery. In MG she wants a big-voice and in PB she wants funny, character-driven, and quirky stories. In nonfiction she is looking for cooking, lifestyle, pop culture and humor, self-help, crafts and women's interests. A great character and strong voice will always grab her.
What is her advice to writers? First off, you need to write to be a writer. When you query her, let her know what else you are working on. Next, know your audience and your competition. Lastly, send in your most polished form when you query. Grammar counts!
How do you submit? Please see the agencies guidelines here.
In short- For electronic submissions, please send a query letter to Kathleen@MarsalLyonLiteraryAgency.com and write "QUERY" in the subject line of the email.
For snail mail send the following:
Fiction Query: please include a cover letter, 1 page synopsis of your work, and the first 10 pages of your manuscript.
Non-fiction Query: please include either (a) the cover letter or (b) the cover letter and your complete proposal. What goes into a non-fiction proposal?
